Volunteers will work in our dock (warehouse) facilities, sorting, packaging, and distributing surplus food to those in need. Ridealongs with a staff member will also be in the rotation of potential opportunities. Tasks may vary based on the warehouse’s operations and immediate needs. Before committing to this shift please make sure you have completed our Advanced Kitchen Qualifications quiz, have read the Dock Volunteer Overview Document attached to this event (right-hand side), and have completed our Dock Volunteer Quiz to ensure that you are up to par for our safety, sanitation, and physical protocols. If you have not completed these three steps, we reserve the right to not utilize your help for this shift.

Typical Responsibilities

1. Food Sorting and Inspection
   • Inspect donated food items to ensure they meet safety and quality standards.
   • Separate perishable and non-perishable items.
2. Order building 
   • Build orders for our share partners based on specific criteria.
   • Double-check for accuracy with a supervisor.
3. Storage and Inventory Management
   • Organize food items in storage areas according to categories (e.g., canned goods, produce).
   • Rotate stock to prevent spoilage. 
4. Cleaning and Maintenance
   • Maintain cleanliness in workstations and common areas.
   • Dispose of damaged or unusable items responsibly.
5. Loading and Unloading of Volunteer drivers
   • Help load food for delivery for our share partners based on specific criteria
   • Help unload rescued products from places like Kroger, Graeters, Servattis, and more. 
   • Help our education team load up key supplies for cooking classes and Give a Croc program.

Key Skills and Qualities

• Attention to detail for inspecting food quality.
• Teamwork and communication skills.
• Physical stamina for tasks like lifting and moving items upwards of 50# continuously. 
• Flexibility to handle various roles as needed.
• Ability to handle fluctuation of temperature from the heat of the warehouse into freezers and coolers. 
• Capability to read fine print on product labels.
